Police have taken a suspect into custody after an hourslong standoff at an Atlanta office building
The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Rafeal Edward Brooks, was taken into custody shortly before 5 p.m. ET on Monday, August 8, 2023, after a standoff that began around 11 a.m. ET. According to police, Brooks is suspected of shooting and killing one person and injuring another at the office building located at 3344 Peachtree Road NE in Buckhead.
The standoff began after police responded to reports of an active shooter at the building
When officers arrived, they encountered Brooks, who was armed with a gun. Brooks refused to comply with officers' commands and retreated into the building, where he remained for several hours.
During the standoff, police evacuated the building and established a perimeter around the area. A SWAT team was called to the scene, and negotiations with Brooks began. After several hours, Brooks surrendered to police without incident.
Brooks is now in custody and is expected to be charged with murder and aggravated assault
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and police are working to determine the motive for the attack. The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
