New Era, Same Goals for Izzo and Spartans

Tom Izzo enters his 28th season as head coach of the Michigan State Spartans with a new-look coaching staff but the same lofty goals. Izzo, the winningest coach in program history, has led the Spartans to eight Final Fours and a national championship in 2000.

This year's team will be led by a trio of seniors in guard Tyson Walker, forward Joey Hauser, and center Marcus Bingham Jr. Walker is the team's leading returning scorer, averaging 12.9 points per game last season. Hauser is a versatile forward who can score inside and out, while Bingham is a rim-protecting center who averaged 2.6 blocks per game last season.

Young Guns Ready to Make an Impact

In addition to the veteran leadership, the Spartans will also rely on a talented group of newcomers. Freshman guard Jaden Akins is a highly touted recruit who is expected to make an immediate impact. Akins is a dynamic scorer who can create his own shot and make plays for others.

Another freshman to watch is center Jaxon Kohler. Kohler is a 7-foot-1 center who is known for his defense and rebounding. He is expected to provide a much-needed presence in the paint for the Spartans.

Outlook for the Season

The Spartans are picked to finish in the top half of the Big Ten this season. They have a veteran leader in Izzo and a talented roster that includes a mix of experience and youth. If the Spartans can stay healthy and play to their potential, they have the potential to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
