UK Tourists Warned as Spain Issues Rare Weather Alert
Severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hail expected to hit popular holiday destinations
The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a rare weather alert for parts of Spain, including popular tourist destinations such as the Costa del Sol and the Canary Islands. The alert, which is the highest level of warning issued by AEMET, warns of severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hail, which could cause flooding and other dangerous conditions.
The alert is in effect from 12:00 UTC on August 10th until 00:00 UTC on August 11th, and affects the following regions: Andalusia, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, and the Canary Islands.
The AEMET is urging people to take precautions, such as staying indoors, avoiding driving, and securing loose objects. They also recommend that people be aware of the risk of flooding and other hazards, and to follow the advice of local authorities.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued travel advice for British nationals in Spain, warning them to be aware of the weather alert and to follow the advice of local authorities.
The FCDO also recommends that British nationals in Spain register with the Embassy in Madrid or the Consulate in Alicante, so that they can be contacted in the event of an emergency.
