Rublev Loses to Cerundolo in Paris Masters Second Round
Russian Star Falls in Straight Sets
Andrey Rublev's hopes of a deep run at the Paris Masters were dashed on Wednesday as he was defeated by Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Rublev, the fifth seed in Paris, came into the match as the heavy favorite, but he was unable to find his rhythm against the inspired Cerundolo. The Argentine played aggressively from the outset, hitting deep groundstrokes and forcing Rublev to make errors.
Cerundolo broke Rublev's serve in the opening game of the match and never looked back. He held serve comfortably throughout the first set and broke Rublev again in the fifth game of the second set to take a commanding 5-2 lead.
Rublev fought back to break Cerundolo's serve in the eighth game, but it was too little too late. Cerundolo held serve in the ninth game to seal the victory and reach the third round of the Paris Masters.
Cerundolo Continues to Impress
Cerundolo's victory over Rublev was his second big scalp of the tournament, having also defeated Alexander Zverev in the first round. The Argentine is now through to the third round of a Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career.
Cerundolo has been in excellent form in recent months, winning his first ATP title in Bastad in July. He also reached the semifinals of the Hamburg Open and the quarterfinals of the US Open.
With his victory over Rublev, Cerundolo has now moved up to a career-high ranking of world No. 27. He will face either Marin Cilic or Karen Khachanov in the third round of the Paris Masters.
Rublev's Disappointing End
For Rublev, the loss to Cerundolo was a disappointing end to his season. The Russian had hoped to finish the year on a high after winning the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in February and reaching the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters in April.
However, Rublev has struggled for form in recent months, winning just one of his last six matches. He will now have to regroup and prepare for the new season, which begins in January.
