Milan adrift. Lowly sides collect points, while the Serie A dark horse advances
Milan failed to make the most of its home game against Sassuolo and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
The Rossoneri took a quick lead with their first chance thanks to Olivier Giroud's goal in the 17th minute. But the Neroverdi, who are battling to get into the top ten, came back in the second half through Gregoire Defrel's header to secure a point.
The result leaves Milan 16 points behind league leaders Napoli after 25 matches played, while Sassuolo is tenth, just one point behind the European spots.
AC Milan have dropped points against mid-table teams.
It was the second time in a row that Milan has failed to win against a team from mid-table or below. Last week, they were held to a goalless draw by Bologna.
These dropped points have allowed Inter Milan to close the gap at the top of the table. The Nerazzurri are now just three points behind Milan with a game in hand.
The team that has taken advantage of Milan's struggles is Atalanta.
Atalanta is now third in the table, 13 points behind Milan but with a game in hand. The Bergamo team has won its last four Serie A matches.
Atalanta has a reputation for attacking football and has scored the second-most goals in the league this season, behind only Napoli.
Atalanta will travel to the San Siro to take on Milan.
The match between Milan and Atalanta is scheduled for Sunday, March 19. It will be a big test for both teams.
Milan will be looking to bounce back from their recent setbacks and maintain their lead at the top of the table. Atalanta will be looking to continue their good form and close the gap on the Rossoneri.
