Jordan Burroughs aims for eighth world title after turning career around

From being booed to being a legend

Jordan Burroughs didn’t want to end his career being booed by American wrestling fans. After a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics and a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Burroughs won another bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but this time the fans in attendance at the games let him know how unhappy they were about it. Despite holding a 3-1 lead in the bronze medal match with Myles Amine of San Marino, Burroughs gave up a takedown and lost. Sitting on the podium, with Amine celebrating, Burroughs could hear the American fans booing him.

“It was devastating,” Burroughs said. “The fans booed me. The Americans booed me. I was heartbroken.”

After the loss, Burroughs went away to regroup and ponder his future. He thought about what he wanted out of his wrestling career and came to the conclusion that he didn’t want it to end on such a negative note. Coming back for the 2023 season, he did not compete as much as he had in the past, but he entered the World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia as a favorite to win another gold medal.

Burroughs dominated the competition in Belgrade, winning his first six matches by a combined score of 31-0. In the semifinals, he faced Amine again and this time, he defeated him, 10-0, to advance to the finals. In the finals, he faced Russia’s Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov and won, 4-2, to claim his eighth world title.

After the match, Burroughs celebrated his victory with the American flag draped over his shoulders and yelled out, “I’m not done yet!”

Legacy

Burroughs is now one of the most successful wrestlers in American history. He is the only American wrestler to win eight world titles and is just one of four wrestlers in the world to win at least eight world titles. He is also the youngest wrestler to win eight world titles.

Burroughs’ success is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and perseverance. He is a role model for young wrestlers and is an inspiration to all Americans.
