Flyers' Samuel Ersson: In Net Versus Boston
Ersson Could Get the Start in Net for Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers may turn to rookie goaltender Samuel Ersson in net Tuesday night in Boston. Although Carter Hart has started six of the last seven games for the Flyers, there's a chance that head coach John Tortorella could give Ersson a shot in net against the Bruins. Ersson, 23, has played in just one NHL game this season, making 38 saves on 41 shots in a 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers on Nov. 23.
Ersson has been recalled from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League (AHL) twice this season, but he has yet to make his NHL debut. If he does start against the Bruins, it would be his first career start in the NHL.
Ersson Has Impressed in the AHL
Ersson has been impressive in the AHL this season, posting a 9-4-3 record with a 2.59 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage. He has also recorded two shutouts.
Ersson was drafted by the Flyers in the fifth round (143rd overall) of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He spent the 2018-19 season with the Flyers' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, before returning to Sweden to play for HV71 in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) for the 2019-20 season.
Ersson Could Be the Flyers' Goalie of the Future
Ersson is considered to be one of the Flyers' top prospects. He is a big goalie with good athleticism and puck-handling skills. He is also very competitive and has a strong work ethic.
If Ersson can continue to develop, he could be the Flyers' goalie of the future. He has the potential to be a starting goalie in the NHL, and he could help the Flyers return to contention in the near future.
