Costco Recalls Chicken Products Over Listeria Linked to Much Larger Meat Recall by BrucePac

On Tuesday, the grocery chain Costco Wholesale Corporation announced a voluntary recall of several of its Kirkland Signature brand rotisserie chickens and chicken salads due to possible contamination with listeria monocytogenes. The recall is part of a larger recall by chicken supplier BrucePac LLC, whose cooked, ready-to-eat chicken products were linked to 28 illnesses across 10 states.Costco's recall includes all rotisserie chickens and chicken salads sold in the deli section of Costco stores with package dates ranging from July 14, 2023, through September 13, 2023. The recalled products were sold in 2-pound packages and have either a “best by” date of September 15, 2023, or earlier. The recalled products also include 1-pound packages of Kirkland Signature Chicken Salad with package dates ranging from August 20, 2023, through September 11, 2023.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeria infection can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Costco advises customers who purchased the recalled products to discard the products immediately and bring their receipt to any Costco store for a full refund. Costco is also in the process of contacting customers who purchased the recalled products through Instacart.
In addition to the recall of its chicken products, Costco has also removed all BrucePac brand cooked, ready-to-eat chicken products from its stores.
BrucePac LLC has issued a recall for more than 540,000 pounds of its cooked, ready-to-eat chicken products, including chicken salad, chicken breast patties, and grilled chicken strips. The recalled products were sold under the brand names BrucePac, Mealtime Classics, and Torino’s throughout the country.
The CDC is advising consumers not to eat, sell, or serve any of the recalled BrucePac products. Consumers who have purchased the recalled products should discard them immediately.
