British tourists warned as major Spanish city poised for fresh ban
Tourists warned of impending travel ban
British tourists have been warned to reconsider their travel plans to a popular Spanish city as the local government prepares to impose a fresh ban on visitors.
The city of Barcelona is considering re-introducing restrictions on tourists in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19.
The move comes as Spain grapples with a surge in cases, with the country’s 14-day incidence rate now at its highest level since late January.
Tourists urged to check travel advice
The British Foreign Office has advised Britons to check the latest travel advice before planning any trips to Barcelona.
The FCO said: “The Spanish government is considering introducing a ban on tourist travel to Barcelona.
“If you are planning to travel to Barcelona, you should check the latest travel advice and be prepared for the possibility that your travel plans may be affected.”
Ban could come into force next week
The ban could come into force as early as next week, according to local media reports.
The Catalan government is expected to make a decision on the ban on Friday.
If the ban is imposed, it would be the second time that Barcelona has restricted tourist travel during the pandemic.
The city introduced a similar ban in March 2020, which was lifted in June 2021.
